Q: Should you treat an oak porch?

Oak porches do not have to be treated because oak is naturally resistant to pests, insects, and rot. However, you may prefer to treat your oak with a stain to alter its appearance, or a treatment to prevent the oak silvering from UV damage. Treatments can also increase the oak’s resistance to pests and rot.

Q: What type of oak is used for a porch?

Both green oak and air dried oak are suitable for porches. Green oak is recommended for porches that do not incorporate glazing, since green oak has a high moisture content so it will shrink as it dries. Air dried oak can be used for porches where glazing will be incorporated as this has already undergone a drying process.

Types of Oak Porches

Open Porch

An enclosed porch is an ideal solution to extend the living space of your home, providing a seamless transition from the outdoors. This porch features sturdy brick walls or glazing, fully enclosing the structure to offer both shelter and additional space.

An oak canopy is the simplest porch structure and consists of an overhead canopy that adds character and dimension to a home.

Lean To’s

Oak Porch FAQs

Do you need planning permission for an oak porch?

A porch will typically fall under permitted development, meaning you do not need planning permission to install it. For this to be the case, you must adhere to the limitations:
● The porch must be separated from the main property by the main property’s outer door
● Any glazing or electrical fittings must comply with relevant building regulations
● Must be a similar appearance to the exterior of the main property
● Not located within 2m of any highway boundary
● Maximum floor area of 3m²
● Maximum height of 3m²

Should you treat an oak porch?

What type of oak is used for a porch?

Do porches need foundations?

Yes — for the majority of oak‑framed porches, proper foundations are advisable. Where the porch is enclosed, partly enclosed, or features structural elements such as posts, glazing or a tiled roof, a trench foundation is usually required. This provides a stable base, helps avoid settlement or movement, and protects against damp or ground moisture.

For very simple porch styles — for example, a small over-door canopy- deep foundations may not always be necessary. However, even in those cases, it is wise to provide a stable base or pad to ensure the porch sits correctly and performs well long term.

Does a porch need guttering?

Guttering is strongly recommended for oak‑framed porches. By installing a gutter and downpipe, you control rainwater from the porch roof — directing it away from the oak frame, doors and walls. This protects the structure and surrounding brickwork from damp, water staining and soil erosion, and helps preserve the look and integrity of your porch over time.

If your porch roof overhangs significantly and water is able to drain well away from the building, guttering may be optional.
